The ceremony highlights the exceptional efforts of those who have demonstrated bravery, dedication, and service in support of public safety. Among the honors presented will be the prestigious Citizen Medal of Valor. This is the highest award presented to citizens who display extreme courage or heroism during a police action in an effort to provide protection or preservation of life and is a testament to the incredible citizens and businesses that constitute our tight-knit community.
On March 13, while seated on a park bench, Hum Duchanes heard the screams of a child and looked up to see a four-year-old clinging to a fifth-floor windowsill. As others called 911, Hum ran beneath the child, positioned to break the fall. Moments later, the child fell, and Hum caught the child mid-air, absorbing the impact and saving a life. Hum’s instinctive bravery and selflessness earned them the department’s highest civilian honor.
Also being recognized is April’s Employee of the month, Dee Mathena, who has 30 years of service with the Tampa Police Department’s Communications Bureau. Dee Mathena demonstrated calm, clear leadership during a recent critical “shots fired” incident, efficiently coordinating response units to help ensure a safe apprehension. She also serves as a mentor to new dispatchers, preparing them for high-pressure situations. Her professionalism and leadership embody the department’s highest standards.
In addition to these awards, other commendations will be presented to officers and staff who have consistently gone above and beyond the call of duty to serve the City of Tampa and its residents.
