The Tampa Police Department is proud to announce its participation in a statewide safety campaign aimed at reducing the number of serious injury and fatal traffic crashes involving pedestrians and bicyclists. This initiative, conducted in partnership with the Institute for Police Technology and Management (IPTM) and The University of North Florida (UNF), will focus on educating citizens about Florida traffic laws pertaining to pedestrian and bicycle safety.
The safety campaign, which will run through May 2025, involves increased patrols on Tampa's roadways to identify and address violations related to pedestrian and bicycle safety. Officers will actively engage with roadway users, providing educational outreach to violators and emphasizing the importance of compliance with traffic laws. This effort will target both pedestrian and bicycle safety violations, as well as the responsibility of vehicle drivers to ensure the safe movement of pedestrians and bicyclists.
The primary goal of the campaign is to increase awareness of traffic laws affecting pedestrians and bicyclists, ultimately leading to a reduction in the number of crashes. By promoting education and compliance, the Tampa Police Department aims to create a safer environment for everyone using our shared roadways.
To support this initiative, increased police presence will be focused on the following roadways:
• West Hillsborough Avenue
• East Busch Boulevard
• North Nebraska Avenue
• East Fowler Avenue
• Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard
• West Kennedy Boulevard
• North Florida Avenue
• North and South Dale Mabry Highway
• Downtown Area
This traffic safety initiative is part of the Florida Department of Transportation's (FDOT) "Alert Today, Alive Tomorrow" campaign. The Tampa Police Department was awarded a contract by FDOT, in cooperation with IPTM, to increase police presence in areas with a history of serious injury and fatal crashes. This partnership is designed to promote overall traffic safety and reduce the number of citizens seriously injured or killed in traffic crashes within the City of Tampa.
