What's happening here:
Samu and Meebo found out how to combo bosses in Tales of Xillia 1 legitimately. Basically, if the boss has no AC they can't use any attacks. And thus, if they have no AC they cannot counter. In this video, I showcase the easiest way possible to achieve this. You can use water weapons or attacks to inflict the "Weak" status effect which halves AC. I'm also playing with no bonus AC from the Grade Shop which happens to increase boss AC too. When you inflict the Weak Status on top of not activating the Grade Shop options, their AC gets rounded down to TWO. So you can see me punish Ivar after he chains two attacks and then combo him to death.

My own personal thoughts on it if anyone cares:
If anyone has ever heard me talk about X1, they would know that the reason I like playing this game so much is the back and forth between me and the boss. To be completely honest with you, it kind of disturbs me that this strat exists and might become seen as the optimal or cooler way to play the game. It's a very fundamental shift in playstyle that makes X1 play more like X2... and with X2 having its extra artes and weakness combo mechanic, it just makes X1 a worse X2 in my mind. If you play the way I did in this video, I'd say it's easier to start combos on bosses in X1 than it is in Vesperia which is a crazy sentence to write out. Of course, if you play without the Weak Status or keeping the Grade Shop AC it becomes a more unviable/difficult strategy.

I guess a bit of my current feelings has to do with ego too. I spent a lot of time on the X1 runs that I did over the last two years and I'd honestly be quite sad if people came to see that style of gameplay as the "lame" way to play. I feel like this could happen because I've had to talk to so many people who say X1 sucks because they cannot combo the bosses. Well, now they can be combo'd so I guess we'll see if people start liking the game now. It's like the most cringe thing ever for me to say something like, "Not my Xillia 1" but that is kinda how I'm feeling even if I do think that my own brain is being irrational.

To future/current Xillia 1 players: I won't hate you if you play in this way nor do I condemn this playstyle in its entirety. I think that, in a vacuum, it's actually pretty cool that we've finally found out how to combo bosses in this game! I'm always genuinely happy to see more people playing Tales and if this causes more people to enjoy/play Xillia 1, I think that's a good thing. Just don't be an ass about it by saying stuff like "the game is good now cause you can combo" or something like this.
