Across Britain, beaver kits will be taking their first steps and swims outside the lodge around now.
Born with their eyes open, a dense coat and small incisors already coming through, beaver kits are surprisingly well developed from day one. For their first few weeks, they remain highly dependent on their family, practising swimming, grooming, nibbling, play-wrestling with siblings and learning the skills they need inside the safety of the lodge.
Kits can take up to around three months to be fully weaned and independent, which is why families cannot be trapped or translocated over the summer while young kits are still dependent on their parents and the family group.
By 4 to 6 weeks old, kits begin to explore the wider territory with parents and older siblings, often swimming in an adult’s wake or hitching a ride on a tail. As you can see from the video, they are curious, playful and full of energy.
While natural expansion is happening, if we want to fully realise the benefits beavers can bring in tackling the climate and biodiversity crises, we need to actively support their return through carefully managed translocations into new catchments.
