Presumably useless glitch that I found a while ago , I couldn't find it documented anywhere.
A similar glitch with different results has been performed by @dustux in submarine levels as seen here:

Just open the inventory right before leaving any level! The palette will be different depending on where the glitch has been done.
Entering any level will get rid of the effect.
