Tease clip from the latest viscuit video which is dropping on Friday. 😍 Click on this link (youtu.be/fdqb-CHyHNM) and you can watch a snippet from the soon to premiered show where I catch the northern lights from Southern Wales😁
The video is jam packed with technical astro goodness as well as tear your hair out moments of inevitable biscuitiness. The mission is to build a telescope as sharp as Kitt Peak (again) only this time I make use of a neat trick and get help from a guy who owns 3 CNC machines.

Fyi I think the UFO's we're military helicopters that spotted my scope and decided to check it out as I was pointing directly into the flight path of planes landing at Stanstead airport.
Also I managed to get some Ha data from my roof in london which I didn't mention in the video. Actually there is a lot of tech stuff that I didn't mention in the video but you can find more info here astrobiscuit.com/luckyimaging

CAMERA:
I bought my very well used Canon 5d mark ii second hand very cheaply but if I had a bit more cash I would buy a Canon 6D because it is more sensitive and has lower noise than the canon 5d mark ii. I saw them going for £300 on ebay just before Christmas.
In order to get the best out of the camera you need to remove the infra-red blocking filter which sits in front of the sensor. You can do it yourself but it is a risk (and more modern cameras are much more tricky to modify). I recommend Andy Ellis at Astronomiser to do this mod professionally. Andy also cleans the sensor as part of the service: http://www.astronomiser.co.uk

The Opticron Imagic TGA 7x50's only cost me £69 - amazing - unfortunately they are now discontuinued HOWEVER my fantastic budget Opticron binoculars are not now the best bang for your buck. You will see the similar views with Celestron Cometron 7x50 binoculars:
***Want to buy a similar pair of BINOCULARS? ***
Celestron Cometron 7x50 ($40ish) in the USA: amzn.to/31rVwcY
or in the UK and Europe these £50 binos are greatvalue : bit.ly/helios10x50binosUK
Or if you want a really fancy pair with a very nice crisp and contrasty views I suggest...
Celestron Skymaster 9x63. these are on a deal in the US ($250): bit.ly/9x63celestronbinos
And good value here in Europe too: bit.ly/9x63celestronEU

From my home in London I can see the moon and the planets and the sun and globular clusters and open clusters with binoculars but to get the really faint stuff you need to be somewhere dark. So I went to Dartmoor National Park in Devon. Thank you Fiona and Stephen and family for making me so welcome. If anyone else want to pop to the same spot its here...

😉MASSIVE THX TO RIKTENSTEIN FOR THE AMAZING TUNES 😉
Rik Bandcamp: riktenstein.bandcamp.com
This was really the first time I've had the opportunity to just kick back and look at the stars, nebula and galaxies through binoculars somewhere really dark. The last time I was on Dartmoor with binos was when I tried to shoot the Andromeda galaxy with my phone through some even cheaper binos. The results were good and I'm really pleased with the video - its my most popular one
youtube.com/watch?v=njk0cfnjpV8&t=1s
but I didn't spend any time at all just looking. Up until now I've really concentrated on astrophotography but this experience was cool and its making me think more and more about observing. And to see the faint stuff I need to be in complete darkness. Problem is to film in complete blackness is useless. I had to have some light on me for my phone to be able to film me and that in turn ruined my night vision. I'd be really keen for more experienced binocular astronomers to let me know if you can see more with proper night vision and if so how much more. Also if anyone has any suggestions for bigger better binos (but also quite cheap as coronavirus has decimated my earnings (I make tv shows) then please let me know.
Hope you like this video all the best and stay safe ;-)

I posted the footage of this ufo on my astobiscuit facebook page and thousands of people thought they knew what it was and gave me a whole range of answers. The top 8 theories were...
Mar's Moon
Bug in the lens
Satellite
Aliens
Bird
Asteroid
Space Junk
Weather Balloon
... but they can't all be right. So I decided to go on a journey into space and try to find out what this object passing in front of Mars really is.

Before going into details I just want to say a MASSIVE thank you to Riktenstein (link below) for the AMAZING music.

and also a big thank you to Damian Peach for unintentionally giving me the idea to use a bean bag when I interviewed him to get some tips on planetary photography
youtu.be/SfrA_z1F0JY
Damian has done some tutorials for those of you wishing to delve deeper into the subject and would like some tips on post processing.
http://www.damianpeach.com
However I don't believe he has tried imaging the solar system with his phone. I actually think it works quite well and I just want to give you a few tips to help you if you want to try this...
1- Most important. make sure your phone records video with minimal compression. You may have a high resolution 4k phone but it means nothing if the video is compressed. Cinema 4k on my android is able to record at 200Mbps and this is good enough.
2- Make sure your recording app can adjust the exposure length on the video. Cinema 4k can
3- lock the focus on the phone an then use the telescope to achieve fine focus.
4- In my experience the best eyepieces to use are the ones which contain the least glass. Kellner eyepices are quite good and cheap (which is why I used one in this demo) but Orthoscopic eyepieces are even better.
5 - I had to convert the video from the phone into an avi movie using a free program called PIPP.
sites.google.com/site/astropipp/downloads
I then used another free program called autostakkert to stack the frames.
autostakkert.com/wp/download
and finally I did sharpening and grading in photoshop CS2
Please ask any questions you like, I'm more than happy to answer
and you should def watch my other planetary video too!! Shooting Jupiter Saturn and Mars £100 mission
youtu.be/pYsgyL7I8RI
Many thanks all
All the info is in the video but I will repeat it here...
Date 1st Sept 2018 Time: 20.55.20 GMT
location: North London 51 34' 53" N -0 06' 17" W
The video is shooting at 100fps and the frame size in 320x280. This is pretty standard for planetary imaging.
Many thx to Riktenstien for the wicked music which you can download here...
