April is a somewhat unpredictable month. It marks the transition from winter to spring, which means you can switch between the seasons. Temperatures vary depending on location. In Ticino, it is generally warmer, as spring arrives earlier there. In contrast, the Swiss Alps still feel like winter, with cold temperatures and plenty of snow. Skiing is still possible, as many resorts remain open, although some slopes may be closed due to reduced snow compared to mid-winter months. As April progresses, temperatures gradually rise and the snow begins to melt.
April is also a culturally rich month. Events include Sechseläuten in Zurich, one of the city’s major annual traditions, and the Easter processions in Mendrisio, held on Good Thursday and Good Friday evenings. Around Easter, you can also see decorated flower fountains in Zurich.
From a travel perspective, April is considered a low season month. Hotels are usually not fully booked, and discounts are often available. However, the Easter weekend can be very busy, especially with heavy traffic at the Gotthard tunnel, where delays can reach several hours.
Nature begins to turn green again in April, although the lushest landscapes appear later, between May and September. Waterfalls also become more powerful during this time, with peak flow typically in May and June.
Overall, April is a great time to visit Switzerland, but it requires flexibility and careful planning due to the unpredictable weather.
