When we rescued this baby horse from slaughter in June, he wouldn't let anyone near him. He was wild and frightened, and had been let down by humans who sold him for meat. Like the other horses we rescue, Winston is a beautiful, perfectly sound horse whose owner decided he was no longer useful so he was sold at auction to a kill buyer.
Kill buyers have found a new, profitable niche in social media, where they post videos of horses they know will tug at the heartstrings, along with a deadline for the horse to ship to slaughter. If the horse sells on Facebook, it's saved. If not, the horse is hauled with other hopeless horses to a slaughterhouse in Mexico or Canada.
Horse slaughter was made illegal in America in 2007, which spawned a new, even uglier industry of slaughter transport, and its offshoot industries of hubs, quarantines, hauling and rescues. Each new industry presents opportunities for fraud and abuse.
Swingin' D Horse Rescue saves horses from slaughter and rehomes them with responsible owners. We also educate the public about horse slaughter, rescue abuse and criminals preying on the rescue community.
