Visiting every Texas state park in 2026 and Lake Livingston State Park is my eighth one. This one was completely spontaneous. A tornado warning cancelled my camping trip the night before, and the next evening the weather was too perfect to waste. So I packed up the truck and drove 45 minutes from home.

Lake Livingston State Park sits on the shores of Lake Livingston, one of the largest lakes in Texas, in the Piney Woods of East Texas. If you are looking for a day trip from Houston or a quick overnight camping trip near Houston, this is one of the most underrated options in the region. The park offers lake swimming, fishing, hiking trails, kayaking, and some of the best sunset views in East Texas.
Sometimes you don't need a full weekend. You just need a camp stove, a lake, and a reason to leave the to-do list behind.
