Lots of Honolulu parents have been trying to sign their kids up for swim lessons this fall, motivated in part by the alarming fact that drowning is the leading cause of death for children in the state.
Many have found there simply aren’t enough swim classes to go around.
Registration opened up last week for free lessons offered through the Honolulu parks department and nearly all the introductory classes filled up in a matter of minutes.
Across Oʻahu, swimming instructors say demand for lessons is far greater than what they can accommodate. Nonprofits and community organizations are aiming to change this, working with low-income and West Oʻahu schools to provide swimming instruction.
