This is one of my favorite songs to play on the non-pedal steel guitar, SWEETNIN', by Herb Remington. I'm playing a 1953 Double-8 Rickenbacker. The guitar has horseshoe pickups. It's pretty neat that the 1/4" guitar jack is underneath the body. I have my rear neck tuned to B11th, and the top to A6th. I used a VOX battery-powered amp with a 5" speaker, and 6 C-batteries. I use a Sony boombox to play the tracks.
I made friends with a few dozens black butterflies on the beach. They're really beautiful. I love the sound of the waves in the background. I deliberately used a tide chart to see when high tide was coming in and went to play my guitar at that time, so I could get those natural waves. You can see where the reef is away from the shore, but during hightide the waves flow over the coral and to reach the shore somewhat. God's creation is awesome.
I'm using the A6th tuning for this recording, which Herb Remington Used. I didn't realize it for a long time after I started playing steel guitar, but the A6th is the exact same tuning as the C6th with a high G note on top (just 3 tones lower). In other words, if you tune every string on the C6th with a high G down 3 tones each, you'll have the A6th. The A6th tuning, from treble to bass is: E - C# - A - F# - E - C# - A - F#
I have the rhythm tracks freely available for this song, and also in the key of C for C6th, and even E for E9th pedal steel (just use the 1st string, which is F#, for your high note; and lower your E's, playing open fret). These are Band-in-a-Box tracks I composed, using real instruments. One track has a fiddle, the other a harmonica, and one a clean guitar. So there's quite a few different tracks I've made, and even some free tabs to learn the song on my website link shown below. It's all from my heart in a spirit of lovely music, giving, and genuine Christianity
I use my pinky to do the finger harmonics, and then pick the strings with my thumb and forefinger. These are natural harmonics, meaning that no bar is needed to do them. You can perform natural harmonics at frets 5, 7, 12, 19 and 24. It's easier to achieve the chimes if you pick the strings closer to the pickup, especially for fret 5.
It eventually started to rain, so I put all my equipment away, and then jumped into the salty ocean for a cooldown. It was toasty playing in the sun, but my video camera won't make a good video unless I have plenty of lighting. My camera was in the shade. Still, despite the radiating pain down my right arm today while playing, I had a great time. I have some bone spurs and other problems in my neck that really afflict me most of the time, but every once in a while I feel good and get out to make a video. These days are rare for me, but I thank God for the health I do have. God is good.
