While searching for fossils in the town of Swanscombe in the county of Kent, Dartford borough, England, since November 1933, in the gravel pit of Barnfield, Alvan T Marston in 1935 spotted what he thought might be a bit of bone sticking out, six feet above the pit floor. On closer inspection he, immediately recognised it as a human occipital bone.
The Barnfield gravel pit had been known for decades for the stone tools found there, dating from the Acheulean era and for the fossils of animals from the Middle Pleistocene.So, he was very lucky to find the occipital bone. What made him more excited was that almost a year later, on March 15, 1936, Marston discovered the well-preserved left parietal bone that belonged to the same skull found at the same site.
So, he had found two fragments of the same skull alreadyuntil the discovery of a third fragment on July 30, 1955by Bertram and John Wymerwhich allowed the precise reconstruction of the back of the head.The third skull fragment finally discovered was the right parietal bone, but not the condition was a little worse than the other two. These fragments came to be known as the remains of Swanscombe Man.
