Human species is and always will be a mystery. Today we are here to discuss yet another species full of mysteries. So, who or what is the Ceprano Man? Found 27 years ago, in March 1994, this is an extinct hominin species. Known from only one skull cap, some also know this species as Ceprano Calvarium. Fossils of this species was unearthed during a highway construction near Ceprano, Italy in 1994but we don’t know for sure if that is the place that the individuals inhabitedalthough some believe they inhabited Italy during the Middle Pleistocene.
Discovered and studied by Itallo bidittu, this species was estimated to have lived between 350,000 to 500,000 years ago or exactly 450,000 years ago. The fossil was first estimated to be between 690,000 to 900,000 years old, determined on the basis of regional correlations and a series of absolute dates and also taking into consideration the absence in the sediments of the more recent volcanic activity known in the region.
But, after clarification of its geostratigraphic, biostratigraphic and archaeological relation to the well-known and nearby Acheulean site of Fontana Ranuccio that dated way back to 487,000 years ago, Muttoni et al. in 2009 suggested that Ceprano is most likely about 450,000 years old - the mid of the Middle Pleistocene.
