Our ocean urgently needs our protection. That is why the European Commission is stepping up efforts in global ocean observation as part of the EU Ocean Pact which was presented in June 2025.
The European Ocean Days started on 2nd March 2026. In her speech, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen speech emphasised the critical importance of protecting the ocean, highlighting its role in European life, from providing food and energy to connecting people globally. Yet, the ocean faces increasing pressures from climate change, pollution, and illegal fishing. "OceanEye", a new initiative as part of the EU Ocean Pact, aims at enhancing ocean observation and data collection to protect the ocean's natural heritage and bolster economies. It is an opportunity for Europe to lead in marine data applications, fostering commercial possibilities and scientific advancements, while increasing public engagement and governance to safeguard the ocean for future generations.
