We were honoured to be able to surprise our Random Act of Kindness winner, Maria, when she came in for what she thought was a normal Beamish visit yesterday.

Maria was visiting with her husband Kevin, who nominated her, and her son when she was surprised with the huge Beamish hamper worth over £200.

Maria supports various charities and this year she has raised money for Winlaton Centre, Dementia UK, Cancer Research UK, British Heart Foundation, Alzheimer's Research UK, Macmillan Cancer Support, Hill Top School, as well as so many others.

Maria has been battling breast cancer from July, but this has not stopped her. Maria and Kevin had to postpone their wedding day twice due to her ongoing cancer treatment and, when they were able to get married, Maria used their wedding reception as a Macmillan Coffee Morning to raise funds for the charity as they have supported her through treatment.

Kevin said in his nomination that Maria is so charity focused and has told all of their family and friends that when she loses most of her hair it will cost them, as she will shave it off for charity to raise funds to support cancer treatment.

He added: “We are so proud of her positivity and focus on always helping others. She is everyone's friend and is the kindest person you will ever have a pleasure to meet. Regardless of how much she herself has had to encounter this year, she has never stopped turning each negative into a positive and this is always charity or kindness related. We really feel she deserves this treat.”

From foodbank collections, raffles and anonymously-given gifts to buying toys to support church groups, inspiring others and giving treats to say thank you to those who have supported her through her own cancer treatment, Maria really is a deserving winner.

Our Random Act of Kindness competition was to spread Beamish joy this Christmas and we were overwhelmed with all the nominations, there really were so many deserving entries.

Congratulations to Maria and her family!
