If you've visited the museum recently, you may have seen that work on the Aged Miners' Homes in our 1950s Town is progressing. Listen to Shannon Turner-Riley, Remaking Beamish Design Team Officer, as she updates us on how the project is coming along.
Visitors to the exhibits will be able to learn about the work of Durham Aged Mineworkers’ Homes Association (DAMHA) and what it was like to live in an aged miner’s home in the 1950s. The space of two of the replicated homes will host sessions for older people, people living with dementia and other long-term health conditions, and their families and carers. This will build on the acclaimed work Beamish’s Health and Wellbeing Team already does at Orchard Cottage, at The 1940s Farm.
Thanks to the money raised by National Lottery players, the project was awarded a £10.9million grant by The National Lottery Heritage Fund in 2016 – a major milestone in Beamish’s history and the largest single investment ever seen at the museum.
Beamish is still fundraising for the project match funding, and there is a fundraising plan in place to guide this work.
