Supergirl bombed while Spider-Man: Brand New Day became a massive event. So what does that say about the so-called “superhero fatigue” audiences have supposedly been experiencing?
I don’t think people ever got tired of superheroes. They got tired of mediocre superhero movies.
For years, demand for comic book movies was so enormous that even poorly received movies could make hundreds of millions of dollars. Then Hollywood dramatically increased the supply just as the novelty started wearing off. Suddenly every superhero movie wasn’t an event anymore.
But Spider-Man, No Way Home, Deadpool & Wolverine and other major releases have shown that audiences will still show up when something feels special.
So was superhero fatigue ever real? Or did Marvel, DC and Sony simply flood the market with too much mediocre content?
