Matt Shakman is reportedly stepping in to direct a new Planet of the Apes movie, and on paper, that sounds pretty exciting. After Fantastic Four, I’m definitely curious to see what he could bring to this franchise.
But the confusing part is the way this new movie is being described as “not a sequel” to Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. After Kingdom set up the next chapter and continued exploring the legacy of Caesar, that phrasing makes me a lot less excited.
So what exactly does “not a sequel” mean here? Is it still in continuity? Are we following different characters? Or is the franchise moving away from the story Kingdom just set up?
