Playthrough with Ken, using the version including on Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection. As you may remember, I did a playthrough of this version on this console a few years back, and it sucked. I savestated my way through the game because I didn't know how to do a genuine one credit clear of it. But now I do know, so here's a redemption run. It’s hard to think that I’ve gone from thinking I could never do this to doing it with three different characters over the space of a few years. I really think I’m done with this game now though.

And after playing this game so much, I think it’s time I ripped into it a bit. The thing that hit me with this game the most -after playing it on several different formats, and using several different controllers -are that the controls aren’t responsive at times. It feels the game will sometimes stuff your inputs, almost like it can’t cope with its own speed and not pick up all the inputs you are doing. It gets frustrating when even basic stuff like quarter circle forward motions don’t work sometimes.

I also feel this game didn’t get tested very thoroughly, as there’s a lot of jank stuff in it. For example, at 11:48 the first two hits of Ken’s dragon punch connect, yet the third one inexplicably doesn’t, leaving him wide open to an unfair counterattack. And this has been said thousands of times at this point, but this version of the game is just way too hard, it puts SNK’s games and the Mortal Kombats to shame. The amount of damage the CPU does with anything is completely unacceptable.

Another thing is I feel that a lot of the new animations that were added to this look slightly off when compared to the original sprites. Like Ken’s new roundhouse kick, for example. I think it doesn’t help that some of these sprites had been in use for three years already when Super Turbo came out.

Anyway, how to beat this game with Ken: use his standing roundhouse kick a lot. Most CPU opponents will get hit by this, there are a few troublemakers (Dee Jay is a pain in the ass, Zangief yet again did his best to embarrass me) but you can get a lot of free hits with this move. You want to be using his jab dragon punch a lot too, and get the super combo gauge full as quickly as possible -whilst the move can be good, if it misses the opponent usually just stands there, so you can throw them when you land. Akuma is, as usual, the most difficult opponent. You want to wait for him to stand still as he usually throws a fireball out after a couple of seconds. If you’ve got a super gauge ready, get in there and use it like I did in both rounds.
