At this year’s CEU Three Minute Thesis competition, Sunna Kokkonen from the Doctoral School of Political Science, Public Policy and International Relations presented a fascinating dissertation topic connecting ecology, politics, and International Relations.
Focusing on the Arctic Njauddâm River, where Atlantic salmon populations are collapsing and pink salmon are establishing themselves, the presentation challenges conventional views. Instead of seeing the fish as mere resources, the talk explores how non-human actors—like salmon—actively participate in shaping river politics, influencing borders, and mobilizing communities through interspecies relations.
