Welcome to our new series, "Sunday Spiritual" where we will be sharing traditional hymns and songs that would have been heard in churches throughout Nova Scotia during the 1940s. This series, featuring vocals by Rowan Wilson-Henkelmann and Pearl Akers on pump organ, will bring to life the Sunday sounds of our rural coastal communities in the early part of the 20th century.
We are excited to share our first hymn "Softly & Tenderly". This Christian hymn was composed and written by Will L. Thompson in 1880. He was inspired to devote himself to writing while attending a meeting by popular evangelist Dwight L. Moody. Allegedly, when Moody was in hospital, he was barred from seeing visitors. When Thompson arrived to visit, Moody insisted that Thompson be let in, whereupon Moody told him: "Will, I would rather have written 'Softly and Tenderly Jesus Is Calling' than anything I have been able to do in my whole life."
These videos are filmed in the historic Clam Harbour Church at Memory Lane. This church was at the centre of the Clam Harbour community during the 1940s and is available to the public to rent for weddings, funerals, and concerts (once COVID restrictions ease).
