"Precious Lord, Take My Hand" was written by Thomas Dorsey in 1932, with the melody said to be borrowed from an 1844 hymn "Maitland."
This hymn is widely said to be Martin Luther King Jr's favourite, and he often brought gospel singers with him to sing it at civil rights rallies to inspire the crowds. It was included as song #223 in the list of 'Songs of the Century' by the Recording Industry Association of America in 2001.
These videos are filmed in the historic Clam Harbour United Church at Memory Lane Heritage Village, and feature vocals by Rowan Wilson-Henkelmann, with Pearl Akers on pump organ. The series brings to life the Sunday sounds of our rural coastal communities in Nova Scotia in the early part of the 20th century. This church was situated in the centre of the Clam Harbour community during the 1940s and is available to the public to rent for weddings, funerals, and concerts (once COVID restrictions ease).
