Nearer My God To Thee is a classic 19th century hymn written in Essex, England by Unitarian writer and poet Sarah Flower Adams. It is based on Jacob's Dream of climbing a ladder to heaven. Some survivors allegedly claim that this beautiful hymn was the last song played by the string ensemble as the RMS Titanic sank into the cold North Atlantic.
These videos are filmed in the historic Clam Harbour United Church at Memory Lane Heritage Village, and feature vocals by Rowan Wilson-Henkelmann, with Pearl Akers on pump organ. The series brings to life the Sunday sounds of our rural coastal communities in Nova Scotia in the early part of the 20th century. This church was situated in the centre of the Clam Harbour community during the 1940s and is available to the public to rent for weddings, funerals, and concerts (once COVID restrictions ease).
