April 2017, a bedsit in suburban Bristol: pan back to reveal a motionless body on a bed. A pillow covers the eyes to stop light from the half-open curtains disturbing the dream. Pan back further. It is the morning after the night before. A couple of coke cans double as ash trays; A couple of pizza boxes - half empty - wrestle for space amongst last weeks clothes and a well-worn Placebo LP.
The bedside alarm is beeping. Getting louder. The pillow moves just a little, and a sleepy eye opens from below. The eye is red and confused, not quite sure where it is but suprised to be there. A lone hand emerges from under the blanket and smacks the alarm into silence.
It's another depressing familiar day, in a depressingly familiar life, in a depressingly familiar world that just will not give up.
But, just for once, this day is going to be different. This is the day that Mark Gardner - for it is he - decides to re-invent himself.
Five years later, almost to the day, ClownFest 8 is has just closed the doors on its tenth and final day of streaming. Tens of thousand of people have watched the show and it's been glorious. Mark is back in that same bed, the latest Placebo album has replaced the old one and the clothes are still in dissaray, but things have certainly changed.
Mark has built a creative army. In the five years past, his enthusiasm, determination and sheer hard work has focused a global collective of artists into a seeminlgy unstoppable force for good. Drawing influence from the 60's culture of love and nurture, the group is supremely supportive and protective of its kind and a refreshingly wonderful alternative to the envy and clout culture of the high-flying insta generation.
It's amazing what one man with a plan and the conviction to follow it through can achieve.
BUT! Is he a real clown? Can he juggle? Do the doors fall of the car when he honks the horn?
