Sun Records was founded by Sam Phillips on January 3, 1950 at the time named Memphis Recording Service. The first rock and roll song, Rocket 88 by Jackie Brenton and his Delta Cats, was recorded here in 1951, leading the claim Sun Studio is the birthplace of Rock’n’roll.

Elvis Presley made his first recording here, a song called My Happiness, making Sun the most famous recording studio in the world. The Million Dollar Quartet is another one of the most notable recordings done at Sun Studio, a collaboration between Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins.

Sam Phillips sold the studio and label in 1969 and no recording took place until September 1985 when a recording sessions with Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Johnny Cash took place. 1987 the Sun Studio reopened and since a number of artist have recorder here including U2, Def Leppard, Tom Petty, John Mellencamp, Paul Simon, Bonnie Raitt, and Ringo Starr.
