Welcome back after our short summer break!

In this episode of Seminary Teachers Helping Seminary Teachers, we are diving into summer training to help you prepare for the upcoming semester. Whether you are a new teacher setting up your classroom or a veteran teacher looking to refine your skills, we are providing practical ideas to help you avoid merely surviving the day-to-day doldrums.

In this episode, we cover:
Summer Training & Dashboard Updates: How to access and utilize the daily micro-trainings on the seminary dashboard.

The Fundamentals of Teaching: We discuss how the classic five fundamentals of teaching—establishing content and context, identifying, understanding, feeling, and applying doctrine—fit perfectly into the modern teaching Venn diagram that focuses on Christ, the student, and the doctrine.

Navigating the Old Testament: We explore why establishing proper historical and literary context is crucial, especially when facing violent stories in Joshua and Judges or the poetry of Isaiah. We discuss how viewing these scriptures as cautionary tales for exiled Jews can help challenge the 21st-century assumptions we naturally bring to the text.

Top Resources for Teachers: You don't need to be an expert in ancient Israelite history to teach effectively. We share our favorite resources, starting with the core Church curriculum, Scripture Helps, the Bible Dictionary, and Come Follow Me. For those who want to dig deeper, we also recommend the BYU Religious Studies Center, Scripture Central, and external tools like NetBible.org.

The "Building a Chair" Analogy: How to intentionally select your teaching methods. Just as a carpenter chooses specific tools to build a chair, we discuss how to look at the required lesson outcomes in the curriculum and intentionally choose the best teaching methods (your "tools") to help your students achieve a converting experience.
