Utah State Senator Luz Escamilla, District 10, is our guest speaker for this Summer Forum program.
Senator Escamilla describes some of the challenges she encountered during the most recent legislative session, particularly the negative impacts of Utah's anti-diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies targeting marginalized communities, including immigrants and the LGBTQ+ population. Noting the increasing negativity and hostility she perceives in Utah's political discussions, she stresses the continued importance of civic engagement, and the need for diverse electoral participation to ensure that government policies reflect the needs of all communities. Escamilla identifies education and childcare as critical areas needing urgent attention and investment to ensure that all children have the opportunity to succeed and that families can achieve financial stability.
Born in Mexico, Luz Escamilla moved with her parents to the United States, where she was a high school graduate in San Diego before enrolling at the University of Utah, where she earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Marketing in 2000 and her MPA in 2005. She is married with five children.
Senator Escamilla represents her constituents living in the West Side areas of Salt Lake City. During her 15½ years as a Utah lawmaker, the Senator’s legislative focus has been on socio-economic concerns facing Utah’s working families and quality of life issues: children facing poverty, childcare and healthcare, transportation access, food insecurity, and air quality. Since 2013, she has served as Zions Bank’s vice president for its Community Development Group.
