On Sunday, April 30, following a congregational vote, Dot Verbrugge, President of the Board of Trustees at Salt Lake City's First Unitarian Church, announced that Rev. J Sylvan had been confirmed as First Unitarian Church's new senior minister, with "overwhelming" support from the church's members, well above the percent that ministers typically require to accept a calling.

The announcement came at the end of a long and exhaustive search for the church's next settled minister, spanning many months. The vote was held just after Rev. J Sylvan had delivered the second of two sermons intended to give the congregation a glimpse of their ministry and vision for the church, and following a long week during which they met with numerous committees and groups at the church, answering questions and getting to know the congregation. The congregation ultimately voted enthusiastically in favor of welcoming Rev. J as the church's next senior minister in the fall of 2023.
