The chemistry of sulfur dioxide takes place in a plastic Petri dish. For disposal sink the Petri dish and contents into water. Sulfur dioxide has no effect on barium chloride solution but if hydrogen peroxide is added, the dioxide is oxidised to sulfur trioxide and barium sulfate is precipiated.
Damp potassium iodate/starch paper goes blue with the sulfur dioxide and then immediately colourless because the iodine produced is reced to iodide ion.
