Janet McElligott examines Sudan’s humanitarian crisis, the atrocities reported in El Fasher and why Sudanese survivors are still fighting to be heard. Discover what survivors entrusted her to tell the world, and learn how she is giving voice to the voiceless.
Janet joins hosts Katrina Carlson and Jefferson Denim to bring the Sudan war into human focus and share the stories now driving her mission. Producer and filmmaker Ken Carlson also steps out from behind the camera to recount how his documentary The Heart of Nuba reached Sudan’s former president and how the film was credited with helping bring about a ceasefire in the Nuba Mountains.
Janet’s promise is simple: “I will speak until the world listens.”

For more than four decades, Janet has worked across international politics, counterterrorism, conflict resolution and hostage negotiations. Today, as founder of Sudan War Crimes, she uses social media and public advocacy to carry stories of displacement, hunger, sexual violence, courage and survival beyond Sudan’s borders.
This is also a story about dignity and determined action. Janet explains why she wears pearls, silk and brocade into dangerous places, how local volunteers are feeding displaced communities and why none of us has to solve everything to make something better.
