Never a dull moment hiking Canyonlands National Park! The Canyonlands Upheaval Dome hike at Island in the Sky is truly something special - the Syncline Loop hike circumnavigates the entirety of the Upheaval Dome, a massive crater created by a meteor strike millions of years ago (or, a salt dome erosion, depending on who you ask). Either way, hiking Canyonlands Upheaval dome offers an incredible perspective on the geological history of the area. If you complete all of the Upheaval Dome and Syncline Loop trails, including the offshoots, you will have the opportunity not only to hike around the dome, but also hike into the crater and witness the impact area for yourself! The Upheaval Dome/Syncline loop trail is often referred to as the best hike in Canyonlands Islands in the Sky, and we agree it is not to be missed if you love geology and insane rock formations! And, as a reminder, winter hiking in Canyonlands is the best time of year to visit :)
