Nikola and Vasylyna’s story was one of resilience and love. Rescued by FOUR PAWS from the streets of Montenegro and Ukraine, they overcame hardship and found companionship at FELIDA Big Cat Sanctuary in the Netherlands. 🦁 🦁
Their bond grew naturally, becoming known as the love story of “Nikolyna.” In April 2024, the pair were transferred to their forever home at LIONSROCK, where they could continue to live carefree. ⛰️
Sadly, in late 2025, we faced a sudden and heartbreaking loss with the passing of Vasylyna. Her absence has been deeply felt by Nikola, who lost his closest companion. 💔
Since then, our focus has been on Nikola’s wellbeing. He remains active and engaged, receiving extra enrichment and supported with a daily routine to help him adjust. 🐾
Strong and resilient, Nikola’s story continues. ❤️

Flora is an active now three-year-old bear who was rescued last December from illegal keeping in Albania. Very likely taken from the wild as a cub, she spent the first years of her life in a barren cage. No trees, no fresh soil to forage, no den to hibernate... she had nothing else but a bed of rocks.
...Until FOUR PAWS came to the rescue and transported her all the way from Albania to her new forever home in Germany! 🚑
Each bear we rescue settle in very differently once they arrive in our sanctuaries. Some need time to carefully observe their new surroundings, some shyly spend weeks indoors to take it all in...
Flora fast-tracked her adaptation: the clever young bear knows how to keep her caretakers busy, as she curiously utilises and understands all the enrichment and amenities in a record time.
🛝Remember the swing that was prepared by the caretakers using old fire hoses? Rocking it.
🪜 The platform that was built for her to climb and rest? Having a blast.
🧂The stimulating scents and tasty new food she was offered to try? Sniffed and slurped, and she now has a list of favourites.
⚠️ Floras story is far from being an isolated case, as many wild animals are still illegally kept in Albania. Bears and big cats that will never get the chance to be rescued and experience the species-appropriate life they deserve in a sanctuary. FOUR PAWS will keep fighting to end the private keeping of wild animals in the country and to put a stop to the unnecessary suffering of wild species for human entertainment. 😾

A second chance, and then another. 🐻
After years of hardship, Frol and Frosia were rescued in 2020 and given a safe home at BEAR SANCTUARY Domazhyr. 🌳
Late last year, the beloved duo moved to our partner sanctuary, BEAR SANCTUARY Belitsa in Bulgaria, where they continue to thrive.
This summer has been filled with pool time, playful wrestling matches, and enrichment treats from their caring team. 💚

This footage, taken in March & April 2026, shows brown bear Tim in Zoo park Rožman, Slovenia, and it’s heartbreaking. 💔
These conditions are being considered “acceptable” under Slovenian law, and the owner of the zoo, Mr. Rožmanec, claims that Tim is “doing well”!
BUT, Tim is not doing well! Tim is suffering!
Tim is exhibiting stereotypical behaviors resulting from stress caused by his very poor, unstimulating, and very small cage.
Tim is exhibiting these repetitive and compulsive behaviors by walking along the bars at the front of his cage, from left to right, and pressing his body against the bars, which is known to be a psychological disorder.
This is all the space Tim has known since he was a tiny cub.
A tattered ball and a wooden block hanging from the ceiling of his cage — that’s all he has to keep him busy!
This is Tim’s life - 24/7.
Tim deserves so much more than this.
At BEAR SANCTUARY Arbesbach we have a 3,500-square-meter natural enclosure ready for him. Here, Tim would have plenty of space to roam, dig, forage for food, and engage with the enrichment activities provided for him. Our offer to rescue Tim still stands, and we could relocate him at any time!
While rescued bears Felix and Mici are finally living the lives they deserve at our sanctuary, Tim remains trapped in a barren cage, deprived of everything a brown bear needs. 💔
Every day he stays there is another day of suffering.

What started as a friendship between Cantik and Bhima at ORANGUTAN FOREST SCHOOL has grown into something truly special. Over the last two years, their bond has blossomed, with Cantik now caring for Bhima in a way that closely resembles a mother-infant relationship.
Today, Cantik is a role model Bhima can learn from and she even shares food! 🍈
