On August 21, 2026, El Reventador Volcano in Ecuador produced a Strombolian eruption, sending bursts of ash, gas, and incandescent material above the crater.
El Reventador is one of Ecuador’s most active volcanoes, located in a remote area on the edge of the Amazon rainforest. Its name means “The Exploder,” a fitting description for a volcano known for frequent explosive activity, glowing nighttime eruptions, lava flows, ash plumes, and rockfalls down its steep slopes.
AfarTV is working to install a new 24/7 4K live camera only about 4 km from El Reventador. This would be the closest camera AfarTV has ever placed to an erupting volcano. From this distance, viewers should be able to see daily Strombolian eruptions in detail — and even hear rocks falling down the volcano’s slopes after explosions.
This is our most ambitious camera project yet. The site is remote, about 7 km up a rough 4x4 jungle road through the Amazon, with no grid power or wired internet. The system will need to run 100% off-grid using solar power, batteries, and Starlink.
AfarTV’s goal is to expand a global volcano-monitoring network that supports scientists, researchers, governments, educators, and the public with continuous ground-based views of active volcanoes around the world.
We’re raising $6,000 to help cover the camera, solar power system, battery storage, Starlink, installation, transport, and setup costs.
