Sangay Volcano produced several explosive nighttime eruptions in this dramatic 4K clip captured from AfarTV’s 24/7 livestream in Ecuador. In the darkness, bursts of volcanic activity can be seen lighting up the summit area as ash, gas, and incandescent material rise from one of South America’s most active volcanoes.
Sangay is a remote stratovolcano in southern Ecuador, located east of the Andean crest near the edge of the Ecuadorian Amazon. It is considered Ecuador’s southernmost and most active volcano, with recorded eruptions dating back to 1628. Its activity can include explosions, ash-and-gas emissions, lava flows, pyroclastic flows, and lahars. The Smithsonian Global Volcanism Program notes that Sangay’s current eruptive period began in March 2019 and has continued for years.
