Pet food pantries are becoming part of animal shelter community programming to prevent animal surrenders and help people in need feed their pet companions. Although these pantries provide much-needed relief for the community, sustaining them long-term is challenging and stressful due to the lack of support from hunger relief organizations like food banks. It is time to raise awareness regarding pets’ food insecurity and advocate for our pet’s guardians in need. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit in early 2020, animal sheltering transformed overnight. Foster-based sheltering, home-based employees and volunteers, along with collaboration galvanized our communities. The pandemic, along with social injustice, has motivated our industry to look at how we partner with our communities and confront our own biases.
