$How Nixon Crushed Protesters With One Epic Speech. The Silent Majority. Richard Nixon’s piss famous Silent Majority address, delivered on November 3, 1969. In this speech, Nixon directly explained to the American public why he refused to let policy be dictated by the hundreds of thousands of anti-war demonstrators marching in the streets. Nixon laid out a firm philosophical argument for why a democratically elected leader should not bow to street protests He argued that if a vocal, passionate minority could force a change in national policy through mass demonstrations, it would destroy constitutional government. Policy would be decided by whoever could organize the largest or loudest crowd, rather than by the rule of law and free elections. Nixon drew a sharp contrast between the visible, loud protestors on college campuses and the streets, and what he called the great silent majority of my fellow Americans—the millions of everyday citizens who were not protesting, but who he believed quietly supported his plan for an orderly, honorable withdrawal from Vietnam. He asserted that mass demonstrations divided the nation and gave hope to the North Vietnamese, convincing them to delay peace negotiations in the hope that domestic political pressure would force the U.S. to abandon the war entirely. Was the Speech Effective in Stopping Demonstrations? The short answer is no, it did not stop the demonstrations—but it temporarily won the political war at home. Structurally and politically, the speech was a massive success for Nixon. It triggered an immediate wave of public support, flooding the White House with thousands of supportive telegrams. Polls showed that a massive majority of Americans backed his stance against the protestors. By successfully marginalizing the anti-war movement as an unrepresentative minority, he bought himself crucial political time to continue his military strategy. While it galvanized his base, the speech completely failed to quiet the streets. In fact, it deeply angered the anti-war movement, who felt dismissed and insulted. Just weeks later, the massive Moratorium to End the War in Vietnam marches drew over 500,000 protestors to Washington D.C. The domestic turmoil would reach its absolute peak the following spring in May 1970 after Nixon ordered the invasion of Cambodia, triggering nationwide student strikes and the tragic shootings at Kent State University. While Nixon successfully fractured the opposition and maintained political control through his 1972 re-election landslide, the demonstrations themselves only grew more intense, enduring until U.S. combat operations in Vietnam finally came to an end.$
