What can a 100-year-old man teach us about Lebanon?
In this remarkable conversation, we sit with a Lebanese man born in 1926 and listen to memories that take us back to a Lebanon that has almost disappeared.
He remembers the French presence in Lebanon, the Jesuits, scouting trips on foot across the mountains, the days surrounding Lebanese independence, and the emotions people felt when Bechara El Khoury, Riad El Solh and the independence leaders were imprisoned in Rashaya.
Through his stories, we rediscover old Bikfaya — a village with only a handful of cars, traditional processions through its streets, local fruits and businesses, strong family relationships and a completely different rhythm of life.
At 100 years old, his mind remains remarkably active. Every morning, he sits at his desk with a newspaper, paper and pens and writes down his thoughts about life, love, politics, faith and human nature.
He also reflects on longevity, family, education and the extraordinary technological transformation he has witnessed during his lifetime — from a Lebanon of horses and handwritten letters to the age of artificial intelligence.
And perhaps his most important message is for the younger generation:
Protect the dignity of the family. Don’t demand more than your parents can give you. And invest in education — because knowledge is the one thing that gives to you without ever taking anything away.
More than an interview, this is living Lebanese history — one man’s memories spanning 100 years of family, village life, independence, change and an extraordinary country. 🇱🇧
