Genesis is not a biology textbook, a geology report or an eyewitness documentary.

It is also not primitive nonsense written by idiots.

Although Genesis reached its final literary form largely during the Iron Age, it preserves and transforms traditions from the much older Bronze Age world of Mesopotamia.
