A project in North inner City Dublin gives young people a basis in motor mechanics and the chance to go stock car racing.

Initially financed by grants from local church groups and non governmental organisations, this small community youth project now receives short term government funding.

The scheme is run by social worker Fergus McCabe. Six young people are learning to drive, some basic car mechanics and preparing for the driving test.

Jim Byrne has experience building his own stock cars, and says he has benefited from this project.

Fellow trainee Thomas Murphy also enjoys coming here. The risks associated with the stock car races in Santry do not stop him from taking part.

Hold your wheel and do your gears, and that’s it.

Fergus McCabe has plans to expand the scheme to other parts of Dublin. Funding from state training authority AnCO (An Comhairle Oiliúna) would be ideal, as it would facilitate engagement with young people throughout the rest of the country.

This report for 'Anything Goes’ was broadcast on 19 October 1985.

The reporter is Aonghus McAnally.
