The frost is beginning to settle and you’re starting to think about preparing your garden ready for winter, but where do you start? You have many questions, and you’re looking for ideas on how to transform your winter garden. Fortunately, in this video, you’ll find Jane Moore, a professional gardener who welcomes you back into her home for the next instalment of her seasonal garden guides. Join us as she shares her winter gardening tips, ideas on how you can ensure your winter garden sparkles, and covers topics such as how to prune wisteria.

Winter is the perfect time to catch up with various jobs around the garden that you just don’t have time to tackle during the spring and summer months. It’s also a great opportunity to evaluate your garden as a whole and think about what’s working and what isn’t. Are there areas in your garden that look dull or boring? Use winter as an opportunity to prepare your garden for the new year.

Even in February, you can still have some winter stars really stand out and flourish. The great thing about having a small garden is that it only takes a few simple plants to make it special. A bright and bold Red Dogwood, Cornus alba Westonbirt plant is a great example as it becomes richer in colour as the weather gets colder. Hellebores are another great winter plant. They may look a bit wilted if they are caught by frost, but don't worry - they will perk right back up once the frost comes out. Hellebore leaves do often end up looking tired and holey in winter though. The best way to tackle this is to cut the tired-looking leaves off, allowing the fresh new leaves to shine through. If you catch them early enough, the flowers will be tiny little buds and a lot easier to chop the leaves off.

The next garden job to tackle in winter is to prune plants such as wisteria. To do this, you’ll need a sharp pair of garden secateurs. The STIHL 3-in-1 sharpening tool is great for putting a quick cutting edge on the blades. These sharpening tools are great as they can also be used with cutting knives, shears and even on an axe.

Even on a really cold winter day, there are still some jobs you can do indoors! February is a great time to get your potatoes started by "chitting" them. What is chitting? It simply means getting the buds growing first before actually planting in the ground. Simply stand them in a seed tray or egg box on a light windowsill, and once the buds have grown to around 1-2cm, they can be planted in the ground.
