STIHL REA 60 & REA 100 Cordless Pressure Washers | Battery Powered Pressure Washers | STIHL GB STIHL GB 2024-10-09 | The STIHL REA 60 PLUS and the REA 100 PLUS are the first cordless pressure washers from STIHL. These compact and lightweight battery pressure washers are powered by an interchangeable 36 volt lithium-ion battery. The REA 60 PLUS is part of the STIHL AK System of battery tools and is designed for medium-sized to larger gardens, making it perfect for use at home, whereas the REA 100 PLUS battery-powered pressure washer is part of the STIHL AP System of battery tools for large gardens and professional applications. Both STIHL batteries are interchangeable with other tools in their battery system. The AK battery that is used in the STIHL REA 60 PLUS can be used to power all the other AK System tools to cover all your gardening tasks. The AP battery that is used in the REA 100 PLUS cordless pressure washer can power an even more extensive range of powerful AP System tools, such as professional cordless chainsaws, hedge trimmers, battery-powered blowers, pole pruners and more. STIHL Wood Moisture Meter | Firewood Moisture Meter | Forestry Tools | STIHL GB STIHL GB 2024-10-02 | When burning wood, one of the most important things to check is that it is properly seasoned first. Seasoning wood is the process of leaving it to dry so that the moisture content of it reduces to the right level. Ideally this should be less than 20%, otherwise you run the risk of generating a lot of smoke when you burn it. Unseasoned wood can also cause a build-up of creosote in your chimney. Plus, seasoned wood has a greater burning efficiency too. The quickest and easiest way to work out the moisture content of your logs is to use a wood moisture meter. This handy little STIHL moisture meter has a clear display and simple controls to measure it in seconds. Simply turn it on and insert the metal spikes into the log, when the moisture gauge is in wood measurement mode. As shown in the video, the display will show the reading so you can tell quickly whether the log is ready to be used. The estate showcases a blend of historic architecture, formal gardens, and lush green landscapes packed with wildlife such as deer. Visitors can explore the beautifully restored house, which displays an impressive collection of Dutch art, furniture, and tapestries from the 17th century.🔶 Behind the Scenes with Jane Moore and Piers HorryAward-winning gardener and writer, Jane Moore, spoke to Dyrham Park’s Head Gardener, Piers Horry, who explained that the site has a long history dating back to the 6th century. But much of the current estate dates from 17th century, when there was Dutch king on the throne, so the entire garden is created and tells the story of allegiance to William III, using a formal baroque-style garden. Although some of the gardens have been lost over time, the team at Dyrham Park have recreated part of the original gardens. Features of Dyrham Park include the avenue and the cascade. The Lorette style of pruning is used on the espaliered apple trees that run along the edges of the avenue to create interesting shapes, whilst the cascade is bordered by formal hedges. The cascade is part of the surviving 17th-century garden and is where the underground river flows out into the pools. STIHL ASA 20 Battery Secateurs | STIHL Electric Secateurs | STIHL AS System | STIHL GB STIHL GB 2024-06-26 | The STIHL ASA 20 battery secateurs are the latest addition to the STIHL AS System range of battery-powered tools from STIHL. Designed for homeowners, they are ideal for pruning trees, bushes, shrubs, and ornamental plants in your garden. These battery-powered secateurs can also be used to maintain orchards or vineyards where you’re making many pruning cuts.Powered by a 10.8-volt lithium-ion battery, they effortlessly cut through branches with a diameter of up to 25 mm in one clean cut. What’s more, the battery that fits the STIHL ASA 20 can also be used in other tools in the AS System range, such as the STIHL GTA 26 cordless pruner, HSA 26 battery shrub shears and SEA 20 vacuum. To use the ASA 20 electric secateurs, first remove the protective sheath. Then, press and hold the power button at the bottom of the tool for a few seconds. It will make a beeping sound to indicate when the secateurs are turned on and the display screen will light up. Pull the trigger twice to open the secateur blades, allowing you to begin working. You can set the cordless powered secateurs to two different opening widths by holding the trigger down for 3 seconds. This allows you to adjust the ASA 20 electric secateurs to the type of work you are doing whether that be larger or smaller branches. The screen will show you the charge level and which blade width mode the STIHL ASA 20 is set to. It also shows you the total number of cuts the tool has done from the date of purchase, which is helpful for determining when the blades require maintenance. The ASA 20 can make around 2000 cuts on a single battery charge. The STIHL ASA 20 battery secateurs have a progressive cut which means the blade follows your finger movement on the trigger. This allows for precise cuts to be made. The fast-closing speed and high cutting performance of the secateur blades means you can work quickly and efficiently with the tool. It has great balance, low weight and an ergonomically designed handle – meaning you can work comfortably over long periods of time. To turn the STIHL ASA 20 off, hold the trigger for 5 seconds. This will then close the blades when you hear a beeping sound. Once the blades are closed, simply press and hold the power button until you hear another beep which indicates the tool is turned off. If you leave the ASA 20 battery-powered secateurs for a few minutes without using it, it will turn itself off automatically. A quick guide with these instructions is also located on the side of the tool for quick reference. The STIHL AS 2 battery is inserted at the rear of the tool, so it is out of the way during work. A maintenance tool for the secateur blades is in the battery compartment which allows for easy adjustment of the blade clearance or opening of the service flap if a blade needs to be replaced. The STIHL ASA 20 cordless secateurs are available as a tool only if you already have the AS 2 battery, or as a set with an AS 2 battery and STIHL AL 1 charger. Some additional accessories for the ASA 20 include Multioil Bio and Superclean spray for the blade set. The STIHL ADA 1000 double battery slot adapter is our latest piece of battery technology that has been developed to offer you another option to power your cordless garden tools. Designed for selected AP System tools, the ADA 1000 adapter is an alternative to the STIHL AR 2000 L and AR 3000 L backpack batteries and has two slots which can fit any STIHL AP battery. It weighs 5.5 kg with two AP 300 S batteries, which is significantly less than an AR backpack battery, and has an automatic switchover feature - meaning when one battery runs out of power, it will automatically switch over to the next one. The STIHL ADA 1000 battery adapter is designed primarily to be used with the STIHL BGA 300 backpack blower to reduce the weight of the cordless blower when working over long periods of time. When using the BGA 300 with the recommended STIHL AR 3000 L battery, it weighs 16.9kg. When paired with the ADA 1000 plus 2 AP 500 S batteries, the weight of the leaf blower is reduced to 13.3 kg. This makes working over long periods of time much more comfortable as you are carrying less weight on your back. This battery-powered pruner is part of the STIHL AS System of battery tools and it's perfect for pruning smaller branches and cutting kindling for the fire. We get plenty of questions about how long the battery lasts on a STIHL GTA 26 battery pruner so we thought we'd test it out. We managed 140 cuts on a single charge in these branches, which were around 3cm thick.Please note that the exact number of cuts you'll get from a single battery charge will depend on a number of factors including the thickness of the timber and the sharpness of the chain. Fresher timber is also easier to cut than older wood, so we recommend cutting branches to length as soon as possible. There will also be a difference in both cutting speed and number of cuts when cutting hard woods (such as oak or beech) or soft woods (such as pine, spruce or fir). STIHL February Garden Guide with Jane Moore | February Gardening Jobs | STIHL GB STIHL GB 2024-02-01 | We’re back with the latest instalment of the STIHL garden guide! This month, Jane Moore showcases jobs to do in your garden in February. The first job is to get on with the pruning. There is a lot to do this month, while the plants are still dormant, but the buds are beginning to swell a little. That makes it easier to spot where to make your cuts. Prune anything from wall-trained roses to apple and pear trees, including the ones that are trained against a wall or fence.Wisteria needs regular pruning to keep its growth and overall size under control, but it also improves the flowering display. Cut back any of the summer growth to two or three buds, and you may need to remove a few flowering spurs if they’re coming out too far away from the wall.🔶 Pruning RosesPruning wall-trained roses is more difficult, especially if you’ve neglected them a bit. But if you stick to the 3 Ds then that’s a good start. Remove any obvious dead, diseased or damaged wood to begin with.After that, you’re aiming for a nice fan shape, with strong stems that are tied in nicely to create an arching framework. Cut back the twiggy growth hard, to stubby little laterals. Finally, finish off with a nice feed and mulch or compost of manure.🔶 Pruning ClematisClematis is easy to prune as long as you know what time of year your plant flowers. If you’re not sure, then keep any pruning light and take note of what time of year your Clematis flowers.The first group are the spring bloomers like Clematis Montana and these don’t need much pruning. Wait until the last flowers have faded, in late spring or early summer, and then tidy them up by cutting back to a healthy set of buds.Summer flowering Clematis need pruning now, and they fall into two groups – the ones that flower early in June and then again later in summer, and the ones that flower late in the season only once. These early bloomers just need a light prune, removing any dead or weak growth.The second group flower later in the summer, after mid-June, and these include the small flowered Clematis Viticella varieties. These flower on new shoots that are produced in this growing season, so last year’s growth should be removed in late February or early March.🔶 Preparing Your Kitchen GardenFebruary is the perfect time to get started on the kitchen garden. It’s still a bit early for sowing direct but there are plenty of other jobs to do like getting your beds ready. As long as the ground isn’t frozen, you can cultivate beds and start to warm up the soil, by covering it with fleece, polythene or cloches, in preparation for sowing in the coming months.If you’re feeling active, this is a great time to build a raised bed now. The great thing about a raised bed is that it allows you to make an early start in the garden because the soil warms up faster and raised beds drain quickly too.When it comes to planting, you can start chitting early potato varieties now. Adding a bee and butterfly border to your garden is a great way to attract wildlife and help support our pollinators.The key thing with bee and butterfly-friendly plants is to have a long season of flowering, providing nectar and pollen galore for months. Some will go on flowering all season long – plants such as Geranium Rozanne start flowering in June and often flower into November. Wide, open flowers are easy for bees to spot and land on.Verbena bonariensis starts later in the summer but keeps on producing masses of these little flowers. They might be small, but these tubular flowers are a great favourite of butterflies, which use their long proboscis to reach the nectar at the base of the tube.Larger tubular flowers like Penstemon and Foxglove have a little pathway highlighted for bees to land on and creep up the flower, getting dusted with pollen as they go and then transferring that to the next flower they land on.We hope you’ve enjoyed these gardening tips and you’re all fired up to get out in your garden this February. STIHL January Garden Guide with Jane Moore | January Gardening Jobs | STIHL GB STIHL GB 2024-01-02 | We’re back with the latest instalment of the STIHL garden guide! This month, Jane Moore showcases jobs to do in your garden in January. 🔶 Winter PlantsBulbs and plants like snowdrops are pushing their way through the ground now we’re into the New Year, and they will be flowering before too long. But your garden can always do with a bit more colour and excitement. There are some fabulous winter plants that are worth a spot in every garden – and some will do well in a plant pot for a few years too. Colourful stems of Dogwoods are great – choose from bright scarlet red varieties, soft yellow or a fiery one like ‘Cardinal’. 🔶 Winter Colours and ScentsAcers like Sango-Kaku have brilliant winter stems. These are more of an investment plant, but you do get a lot of loveliness for your money, and they look great in a plant pot or in the border too.Skimmias are great in pots and window boxes too. They’re almost indestructible and go on flowering for ages so, although they aren’t the most exciting plants, they earn their keep in the winter months. It’s the winter scents that are most appreciated as these plants are so fragrant it’s an aromatherapy lift. They’re also great for any early flying bees and other insects which is exactly why they are so scented – so their flowers can be smelt a mile away by pollinating insects.A good choice for a low maintenance garden is a winter flowering Mahonia like Wintersweet. These are easy, evergreen shrubs with a touch of the Japanese garden about them. For a bigger space pick one of the shrubby honeysuckles like Lonicera fragrantissima. Or you could go for a winter flowering Viburnum like Dawn or Charles Lamont.🔶 Winter Flower MaintenanceWinter flowers need maintenance just like summer ones. It’s vital to keep deadheading your Pansies and Violas through the winter to keep them flowering. It’s easy enough to pinch off the little seedpods every week or so.And don’t forget to water potted plants if the weather is dry too. It’s so easy to think everything is wet and damp in the winter but sometimes these months can be surprisingly dry. Added to that, if the plants have very dense foliage then it’s hard for rain to penetrate.🔶 Planting in WinterThere are also plenty of flowers that you can plant in the ground now. Smaller plants like Cyclamen and Hellebores are perfect for brightening up those odd, dull spots in the garden, making a great understorey planting for shrubs and trees, while pots of bulbs are handy for popping into any gaps that you might have.A popular job in January is to remove the old hellebore leaves. It always looks a bit harsh doing this, but the old leaves are tired and spotty and hide the beauty of the emerging hellebore flowers. A bit of snipping now and these beautiful flowers will look their best in February and March.🔶 CompostingCompost is such a hot topic and it’s one that gardeners can chat about for hours, whether that’s ready-made compost in bags, or how you set about making your own. Let’s start with bagged, shop bought compost. There are so many varieties available that it’s tricky to know where to start.Bagged peat-free compost is much better than it used to be - it used to be prone to drying out, which wasn’t very good for plants and seedlings. Take a good look at the compost and try a few before you settle on a brand.John Innes compost is very stable and useful for longer term planting as they retain their structure well and maintain a steady level of nutrient and water content. STIHL December Garden Guide with Jane Moore | December Gardening Jobs | STIHL GB STIHL GB 2023-12-01 | We’re back with the latest instalment of the STIHL garden guide! This month, Jane Moore showcases jobs to do in your garden in December. It’s almost Christmas and here at the December STIHL Garden Guide we’re feeling festive – and that includes making the most of the garden and all it has to offer.🔶 Making a Christmas WreathThere is so much that you can harvest from the garden to add to your Christmas decorations. Of course, the classic options are Holly and Ivy, and you can use these to dress up pictures and window frames, but there are so many other plants that you can use in interesting ways.At Christmas, simply anything with berries is a must-have – Holly, Cotoneaster, and especially Pyracantha are great to dot around. Evergreens of any sort are great for decorations so things like Christmas box are perfect for table settings, laurels and even good old conifers are useful for bulking up bigger arrangements. And don’t forget fragrant evergreen herbs like Rosemary and Bay tree branches.Dried stems of grasses, hydrangeas and even tough flower heads like Verbenas are great for decorations.Once you’ve gathered all your foliage, you might fancy making a wreath which you can either hang on your door or use as a table centre decoration. You can add moss and foliage to a wreath ring, wrapping it with florist’s wire to hold it firm. Alternatively, you could recycle a ring from a previous year. Once you have a base layer of evergreens built up, then add the highlight foliage like variegated holly, some Euonymus of some lovely fragrant Rosemary. Next, add flower heads, grasses, and other elements like fruits and finish off with any baubles, pinecones, cinnamon sticks and a ribbon or two.🔶 Top Dressing AlpinesNow we’re into the winter, potted alpines will benefit from a top dress of fresh gravel to keep them well-drained, especially where the plant meets the soil. Alpines hate getting too wet so this will help.🔶 Winterising Cannas and DahliasNow that things like Cannas and Dahlias have succumbed to the cold weather it’s time to lift them to store the tubers for winter. Just clean them off and pot them into fresh compost, keeping them dry for the winter in the shed. If you have a very sheltered garden, you can get away with just mulching them with straw or leaf mould, but it can be risky.Some plants are borderline hardy when it comes to surviving through the winter, so a little mulch will help these along. Move potted Agapanthus closer to the warm wall of the house and add a bit of straw in the crown to just give it a bit of extra protection. Remember when you’re mulching to be generous – it needs to be a couple of inches or five centimetres thick to make a difference. Use straw, bark, gravel or garden compost and don’t be afraid to mulch even hardy plants if your garden is very cold and prone to frosts. 🔶 Planting Bare Root TreesThese winter months are the best time for planting shrubs and trees. These are long-term plants that need time to settle into the ground and put down their roots.Because these tend to be the taller plants in the garden as a rule – the big trees and shrubs or climbing and rambling roses - they need strong root systems to anchor them and a good root system to feed them too.The great thing about bare root plants is that you get a lot of plant for your money – a container plant that costs the same amount is way smaller than bare root plants and that’s because the one in a pot needs so much more care from the growers.Bare root plants are lifted in the dormant winter season, which gives you a bit of time before you need to worry about getting them in a permanent home. That extra time is especially helpful if you’re planting a great long hedge, with hundreds of plants to get in.Bare root plants are great because they are so much more substantial, so you get an immediate impact in the garden. They look so much more natural than containerised plants as they have that hard-grown, wind-blown look that makes it look as if it’s been there for ages.🔶 Wildlife WatchCreating a log pile in your garden is a great way to provide a home for wildlife. STIHL November Garden Guide with Jane Moore | November Gardening Jobs | STIHL GB STIHL GB 2023-11-06 | We’re back with the latest instalment of the STIHL garden guide! This month, Jane Moore showcases jobs to do in your garden in November in the STIHL November Garden Guide video.🔶 Making Leaf MouldCollecting leaves in an important job, even though it’s a constant task as they seem to be falling forever. But the colours are beautiful! Leaves have a use as well as being pretty, in that you can collect and compost them to make leaf mould. It doesn’t sound great but it is – rich and dense and just perfect for top dressing around plants or adding to shop bought compost for your plant pots next season. These leaves will take a while to decompose, so it’s a good idea to put the bags in a corner and forget about them. Alternatively, you can add leaves to your compost bin too, as long as it’s not too many at one go.🔶 Making A Log Pile for WildlifeThis time of year is especially hard for wildlife, and the chances are it’s only going to get tougher, so take a bit of time now to create some new habitats. A log pile is about the easiest shelter to make, and it doesn’t need any tools or special equipment. All you need is a quiet corner of the garden, and some good-sized logs from deciduous trees rather than conifers. These will provide homes for all sorts of spiders, beetles, and insects, as well as larger creatures like mice and toads too. If you want to make it more elaborate then you can create a bug hotel with layers of cardboard, straw, tiles and so on but a log pile is perfect for my little space.🔶 Tulip BulbsIt’s sad, but all the bedding plants have faded now, so it’s time to plan ahead for next season! Tulips are brilliantly showy, and they’ll light up the garden from late spring into early summer. The only problem with them is that they’re not as tough as daffodils, they're less likely to come back and they’re more likely to get tulip blight and fade away.Always use fresh compost when you’re planting in pots and look at the bulbs carefully before planting, throwing away any that look soft or diseased. 🔶 Planting A Winter Window BoxRefreshing a window box is easy enough to do without spending much money.A popular choice is to use seasonal specials to give it a bit of colour over the winter. Try using plants like hellebores and ivies and plan to refresh your window box again in spring. 🔶 Growing GarlicThe main thing going on in the kitchen garden bed is clearing up, getting rid of all the finished plants. But, once it’s cleared, November is the perfect time to plant garlic, shallots, onions, and broad beans. Garlic is also super easy to grow, as it grows from the cloves rather than from seed, and it doesn’t need any fuss. In fact, it’s best planted in the autumn, when the cold period through winter helps it to form a good-sized bulb the following year. Break up the bulbs carefully and make sure you buy garlic bulbs from the garden centre or nursery rather than using sprouted supermarket garlic bulbs. These aren’t disease resistant like garden centre bulbs, and they might also be treated with an inhibitor to stop the bulbs sprouting in your veg rack.Space the cloves fifteen centimetres or six inches apart, with the point about two and a half centimetres or one inch below the surface. Cover them up with a layer of fleece until they’re nicely rooted and they will be ready to harvest in late spring or early summer next year.🔶Protecting PotsA handful of horticultural fleece is also very useful for protecting all sorts of plants from frost and cold in the winter. Things like hessian, fleece and bubble wrap are great for wrapping pots, this protects the roots of tender plants (and the pot too) from frost. Don’t forget to turn off and drain down your outside tap too, and then protect it and any pipes from freezing.🔶 Protecting PotsYou might think it’s the snow and frost that are the real killers for garden birds in winter, but the never-ending rain and short winter days that reduce their options for foraging are just as lethal.Start putting out food for the birds now to help them stay healthy, but make sure your feeders and bird table are clean and scrubbed so as not to spread disease. Birds need high calorie content foods to help them through the winter so suet balls, insect and fruit cakes, an all-year-round seed mix, and even kitchen scraps like crumbled pastry and grated cheese will all be very welcome.There’s always more to do in the garden, but that’s our round up of tips for November. This month, Jane Moore showcases jobs to do in your garden in October in the STIHL October Garden Guide video.🔶 Autumn FavouritesYou might think that October is all about autumn colour, falling leaves and things drawing to a close as the nights get earlier and darker. And of course, it is, but it’s always surprising how many plants keep on flowering for as long as they can. This is a great time for planting with the soil nice and warm and damp, as long as it stays mild and not frosty. Grasses and ferns really come into their own as herbaceous plants die back.🔶 ShrubsAutumn is the perfect time of year to plant shrubs and there are so many lovely ones to grow. For wildlife value, try to find a spot for a fruiting shrub like Cotoneaster as birds love the red berries. You might prefer the brilliant purple berries of Callicarpa or Beautyberry is its common name. This is a bit of a love it or loathe it plant and the birds love it. It’s interesting because the birds will leave berries until all the red and orange ones have gone, which means you can enjoy them on the plant for longer.🔶 Autumn FlowersIt’s not all just foliage, there are still a surprising array of flowers to enjoy. Sedum, Verbena and Asters still look fresh as a daisy! These plants are the late stars of the garden, but the trick is to make sure that they get their moment in the spotlight. That means some selective cutting back of surrounding plants.October is usually spent cutting plants back and tidying up for the winter ahead, but times have changed in the past few years. Nowadays, modern practice is to leave your garden be in the autumn, leaving the plants to set seed and die back naturally as the colder weather sets in. This technique is brilliant for wildlife like small birds that can creep about among the stems, pecking up the seeds. It’s also great for many insects that can use hollow herbaceous stems to shelter in. 🔶 WeedingAutumn is the best time to for weeding. For persistent weeds, the best way to get rid of them around plants is simply to dig them out. Rooty weeds like Bindweed and Enchanter’s Nightshade will sprout into growth swiftly next spring so tackling them now, when they’re not growing will give your garden plants a head start in the spring. It’s a constant battle to keep them at bay but roots are easy to spot and to trace back through the soil!Annual weeds like Willowherb or Epilobium, and things like Petty Spurge and Bittercress, are nowhere near as much of a problem. They seed freely and pop up all over the place but they’re easy enough to pull out as they appear. 🔶 BulbsWe’re now well into daffodil planting season but hold on to your tulip bulbs for a bit longer. It’s a good idea to buy them now though, as some varieties sell out very quickly. Tulips need to go in once we start to get the colder temperatures, November really, but daffodils and other bulbs like Anemone corms and dwarf Irises can be planted throughout October.It’s popular amongst gardeners to plant little bulbs in pots. Whilst bulbs such as dwarf daffodils, Anemones and Irises are often planted in old terracotta pots, bowls and all sorts of garden containers! All these bulbs will give you a succession of flowers that you can dot around to brighten up your garden next spring. 🔶 Planting BulbsLittle bulbs make great garden plants too, adding a welcome splash of colour and catching the spring sunshine especially well. They look good in the garden border and will grow well under trees and shrubs, brightening the border beautifully while the trees and shrubs are lacking leaves. Whilst bigger plants are bare of leaves in the early spring, the bulbs can get all the sun they need to bring them into flower.To make the planting look natural scatter the bulbs over the area and then plant them where they land, making sure you plant them at three times their depth. If you’re naturalising bulbs in your lawn, you can do the same, or you can lift a section of turf and plant a handful of bulbs underneath. There’s no limit to what you can do with bulbs - they also look great in raised beds, where you can see the flowers more closely, and in rock gardens too. If you’re not sure what to do with them then plant them in pots as they can always go into the ground later.There’s always more to do in the garden, but that’s our round up of tips for October. This month, Jane Moore showcases jobs to do in your garden in September in the STIHL September Garden Guide video.🔶 Late FlowersAlthough the nights are starting to draw in, there’s a lot going on in the garden in September, especially when it comes to late flowers and the wildlife that feed on them.🔶 Butterfly PlantsBoth Aster and Sedum plants are brilliant butterfly plants, and this is the month that you might spot lots of moths and butterflies in the garden, and that’s because the weather is warm and time is running out for them to mate, plus there is so much late nectar about to feed them.The common butterflies you’ll see in your garden are the White butterflies, the Small White and the Large White, collectively known as Cabbage Whites.You might see a Speckled Wood in a shadier spot but it’s the showier butterflies like the beautifully named Painted Lady that you can’t miss. If you haven’t had much buzzing and fluttering going on, then plant a few butterfly magnet plants like Scabious, which will flower all summer long, or a Buddleia which will pull in the later flying, glamorous butterflies like Red Admirals and Peacocks.🔶 Wildflower PlantingWildflower planting is a good way to fill in the space in your garden – the wildflower mix shown in the video includes Marigolds and Malope. Even though Malope isn’t native to this country, it’s still a brilliant plant for bees and has a long flowering season which makes it good value in the garden, and it’s easy to grow which makes it a winner for all gardeners. 🔶 Collecting SeedsSeptember is also a brilliant month to start planning and looking forward to next year. Doing the groundwork now will pay dividends for the spring and summer to come.To start off, collect some seeds as lots of plants have finished flowering. Collecting your own seeds is a brilliant way to save money but it’s also very satisfying, enjoying that whole cycle of life from seed to plants and back to seed again. There is also the fact that if a plant has done well in your garden, then it’s genetically predisposed to do well again.Plants like Hesperis, Honesty, Marigolds and Foxgloves all produce masses of seeds and they’re easy to grow from seed too. You can let them seed about or give the seedheads a shake roughly where you want the seeds to be.🔶 Saving SeedsIf you want to collect them to sow yourself, then pick a dry day, snip off the pods and seedheads, and then let them dry on a saucer or piece of paper to collect the tiny seeds. And if you want to store the seeds, make sure they are thoroughly dry, then put them in envelopes or paper bags - not plastic bags, though, as the seeds could go mouldy.🔶 Planting Daffodil BulbsSeptember is the start of bulb planting season, going right the way through to November. Bulbs contain all the promise of spring in one little, papery blob. Daffodils and Narcissi are the first bulbs to get in the ground or into plant pots, and they’re the best value too, as they will keep on flowering year after year. They’re also very forgiving of soil and situation and will grow happily even in part shade.The crucial thing to remember is to plant them three times their depth, in holes about 3 inches or 7 centimetres apart. If you’re planting in pots, you can plant much closer, butting the bulbs up against one another for a nice full pot.Daffodils and Narcissi have an incredibly long season and some varieties will flower as early as February, with other varieties looking their best in late April. And all of them make great potted Christmas presents for gardening friends and family.🔶 Pruning A Climbing RoseCutting back around the garden, especially the edges – the shrubs, climbers and hedges - can be an absolute must this month as the garden has a final flurry of growing. And it’s a good time to do it as most of the birds will have finished nesting this late in the season. You’d be surprised how late Blackbirds and Thrushes can nest, though, so remember to have a quick check before you trim.There’s always more to do in the garden, but that’s our round up of tips for September. SHA 56 Cordless Vacuum Shredder & Blower | STIHL Battery Shredder | STIHL AK System | STIHL GB STIHL GB 2023-08-10 | The STIHL SHA 56 is a cordless vacuum shredder and blower in the STIHL AK battery system. This cordless vacuum shredder and blower is designed to help you easily round up all your fallen leaves, green waste and other material, and then suck it up and shred it into a collection bag, making the STIHL SHA 56 a really useful tool around the garden. It not only saves effort from bending down to pick up or sweep leaves, but the shredding process helps the debris take up less space in the green waste bin or your compost pile. Leaves are drawn up the shaped vacuum tube via a shredder impellor into the 40-litre catcher bag. Leaves are shredded up as they pass the impellor so a large pile of leaves is reduced down to a much smaller volume. If there’s any blockages in the battery-powered shredder, there’s easy access to clear it and we recommend taking a steady approach, especially with wet leaves to minimise the chance of this happening. This month, Jane Moore showcases jobs to do in your garden in August in the STIHL August Garden Guide video.Firstly, try to take advantage of rainy weather by putting houseplants outside for some fresh air, or if it’s raining, a good wash and a drink, too.🔶 Watering Plant PotsWatering plant pots is one of the most important jobs through the summer, especially when you’re growing plants in garden containers. It doesn’t matter what they are; vegetables, fruit, or flowers, they all rely on you to keep them watered through the summer.The key thing with watering plant pots is to make sure the plants get a good drink, so water thoroughly. It’s good practice to water a plant once, then go back to it later to give it another soak.🔶 Five Top Watering Tips 1. Water early in the morning, or late in the evening so the sun doesn’t just burn all that moisture away. Watering in the evening means that the plants have all night to take up that valuable water. If you have a lot of plant pots or a newly planted garden, it might make sense to invest in an automatic system. They’re brilliant if you’re going on holiday, and drip or trickle systems are often exempt from hosepipe bans.2. Collect water where you can in water butts or use grey water from washing up. Don’t worry about it having detergent in as it will help the compost to absorb the water.3. Use mulch on your garden borders and veg plots to help retain moisture. This is a layer of material, at least 5cm (2in) thick, applied to the soil whilst its wet. Mulches improve plant growth by adding nutrients or increasing organic matter content, as well as reducing water loss from the soil. But even decorative mulches, like chipped bark and gravel, serve a purpose by suppressing weeds and protecting the soil from drying out.4. It also makes sense to plant wisely, using drought tolerant plants. This is especially important as our summers are getting hotter. A lot of great plants cope with dry conditions – lots of grasses, herbs like Lavender and Catmint, and Salvias are so easy to grow and flower all summer long.5. It’s also a good idea to move plant pots into the shade to try to protect them. It’s such an easy thing to do but it makes a huge difference to the plants.🔶 CuttingsHigh summer is a brilliant time to take cuttings of lots of favourite plants. It’s great to have plants for free, and replacements for plants that die. If you’re new to taking cuttings, don’t worry, it’s so easy that you can take lots. Follow the steps below:- Choose healthy, strong, non-flowering shoots. These should root quickly and soon grow into new plants.- Remove a few likely looking shoots, but make sure they’re longer than the finished cutting. Cut them just above a leaf on the parent plant.- Aim to take a cutting not more than 10cm long.- Use a sharp knife to cut just below a leaf joint, then remove the leaves from the bottom half of the cutting.- If your cutting has large leaves, then you should reduce the leaf area by half to minimise water loss. However, with smaller leaves there’s no need.- Rooting compound does help to speed up the process, but it isn’t essential. If you use it, dip the base of the cutting in the powder, and tap off any excess. - Insert cuttings into small plant pots of moist compost, keeping lower leaves just above compost level and use a dibber or pencil to make a hole for the cuttings.- Cover the cuttings with a plastic bag and tie it securely.- Place your cuttings in a warm position, out of direct sun, to root. Don’t forget to take the poly bag off every day, shaking out any moisture inside to stop it getting too steamy which might lead to rot.- It will take about 4 to 6 weeks for your cuttings to root. The top often starts to grow before the roots have formed, so don’t get carried away until you’re sure they have rooted!🔶 Wildlife WatchIt’s so tempting to cut back all the plants that have finished flowering, but these seeds are brilliant for birds. As the days shorten, a plant’s natural reaction is to try to set seed and it is a good idea to let some of them do just that. Things like Lavender, Verbena, and Globe thistles will all provide food for birds and small mammals like mice.There’s always more to do in the garden, but that’s our round up of tips for August. This month, Jane Moore showcases jobs to do in your garden in July in the STIHL July Garden Guide video.🔶 Pruning Fruit TreesLots of plants need a quick trim in summer to keep them in order. It’s a good time to contain the rampant nature of climbers like Wisteria. Trained fruit trees, like Jane's espalier apple tree, also need a summer prune to keep them in shape and let the light get to the fruit.Don't delay pruning trained fruit trees, such as apple or pear trees, in summer. Those that are restricted into a certain shape need a light trim to help them keep their shape and to stop the tree putting all its effort into new leafy growth, when you want it to be concentrating on growing apples. This pruning also lets the sun get to the fruits so they can ripen nicely, and, while you’re at it thin the apples or pears to two fruits per cluster, so they get nice and big.🔶 Pruning TreesIt’s also a good time to do a spot of light pruning on other trees in your garden. Cherries, plums and all their relations are prone to a fungal disease called silver leaf, which means that winter pruning isn’t a good idea.🔶 Pruning WisteriaWisteria needs regular pruning to keep its growth and size under control, otherwise it will be off around the drainpipe, up under roof tiles and in the gutter. But regular pruning, including a quick summer tidy up, also improves the flowering enormously. Although it seems complicated, wisteria pruning is quite simple especially the summer pruning which is as straightforward as can be. Simply snip off trailing stems, back to a stub of a few buds. This will tidy it up and, like the apple tree, makes sure that all the energy goes into creating more flowers rather than taking over next doors roof!🔶 WildflowersLawns in city gardens are often difficult to maintain, you’ll find they never look happy! Paving straight on to the soil, so the wildflower plants have room to grow in between, is a great alternative to an unhappy lawn. It’s also a brilliant way to manage water in a city garden. Heavy rain can soak away into the ground easily rather than running off the top. Not only does this type of paving or hard surface reduce the chance of any flooding issues, but it also means the moisture is permeating the soil and is available for all the plants around.If you use permeable paving as demonstrated in the video, or keep hard paved areas to a minimum, it can really help to prevent surface water flooding in your neighbourhood, especially if you live in a town or city. 🔶 Deadheading FlowersDeadheading flowers as they go over is essential to keep the show going and to keep plants looking attractive and encourage even more blooms. Bedding plants and repeat-flowering perennials need to be prevented from setting seed to make sure they keep on flowering. Nip off the finished flowers from all your bedding plants, like Pelargoniums, Petunias and Cosmos. They will keep on flowering as they’re desperate to set seed so they can reproduce themselves – so don’t let them! The more you deadhead, the more flowers you will get, it’s that simple. You can even deadhead some perennials like Lupins, Delphiniums and these Sanguisorbas, but it’s repeat flowering Roses that really need regular deadheading.🔶 Companion PlantingAt this time of year, caterpillars can quickly take over your vegetable patch, and they can reduce your vegetables to shreds in days. If you have a bigger vegetable plot, it’s worth covering them with fine mesh netting which will keep the butterflies out and stop them laying their eggs on the cabbages. But it’s amazing how determined the butterflies can be! Planting nasturtiums nearby is a great way to distract them from your veg. White butterflies often lay their eggs on nasturtium leaves and when the caterpillars hatch and feed, they naturally then choose nasturtiums for their own offspring, taking the focus away from your cabbages. You might have heard of companion planting. It really does help to protect your plants, although there’s not really any scientific proof as such. But whitefly hate the pungent smell that French marigolds give off, so that makes them ideal for planting near cabbages, tomatoes, kale and anything else that’s prone to whitefly. 🔶 PotatoesOne of my favourite summer jobs is to dig up early potatoes. You must be thorough though as it’s so easy to miss some.
