Whether you are a casual or professional chainsaw user, it’s so important to make sure your power tools are properly maintained. Making sure your chainsaw chain is sharp is one of those key maintenance jobs, but we often get asked “How do I sharpen my STIHL chainsaw chain?”. In this video, we’ll take a look at the STIHL 2-in-1 Easy File and demonstrate just how easy sharpening your chain can be.

Our 2-in-1 Easy File is a practical and time-saving tool that's perfect for keeping your saw chain sharp. When sharpening your saw chain, it’s important to file both the cutting teeth and the chainsaw depth gauges in order to maintain the best performance. The clever design of the 2-in-1 Easy File allows you to file both the chainsaw cutting teeth and depth gauges in one quick and easy movement. It’s a great tool for occasional users and also professionals that need to perform quick and easy chain maintenance in the field, helping achieve highly accurate results.

First of all, make sure you select the right file for the chain you want to sharpen and always wear protective gloves. Next, secure the bar in a vice and release the chain brake so the chain can be moved freely. Visually check the condition of the chain and teeth and if you see any damage such as cracks or missing teeth, it's recommended you replace the chain rather than sharpen it.

However, if the chain is in good condition then you are good to go! Mark the most worn tooth with a black marker and start from there. You’ll need to make sure that all the teeth are even in length. Line up the pictogram on the file with the direction of the tooth and keep the bar parallel so that you have the correct 30° angle. Once the round file is resting in the tooth, the flat file should be positioned above or directly on top of the depth gauge, depending on its condition.

Apply a medium amount of pressure and maintain a smooth filing action. Where possible, try not to apply too much pressure as you will end up filing too much off the chain. Finish up at the correct 30° angle and repeat this until you have sharpened the cutting edge of the tooth. Continue to repeat this process until all the teeth are done which should leave you with a saw chain that’s sharp and ready to cut!
