Most beginners start the same way in shoemaking — with cemented construction. Gluing the sole to the upper. And that’s a good start. It helps you understand the basic structure without too much complexity.

But today, many beginners go online and immediately see welted construction everywhere. It looks beautiful. It’s strong. It’s one of the best constructions you can learn.

And the natural reaction is: “I want to start with that.”

Here’s the honest answer:

You can…
but it’s a tough jump.

Welted construction requires control, precision, and understanding of multiple steps working together. For a beginner, it can quickly become overwhelming.

That’s why I always recommend a smarter path.

Before jumping into welted shoes, start with a construction that teaches you the same logic — but in a simpler way.

This is exactly what we do in my Dr. Martens Boots Course, where we use stitched-down construction. It allows you to experience working with stitched soles, understand how the upper connects to the sole, and develop hand skills — without the full complexity of welted construction.

Then, when you are ready, you move to the next level — authentic welted construction, like in my Cowboy Boots Course, where everything must be precise and controlled.

And if you want both — the correct progression — I combined them into one path:

Two constructions.
Two skill levels.
One logical progression.

This is not about avoiding complexity.
It’s about building your skills step by step — the way professionals do.
