If you're just beginning your shoemaking journey, it's easy to believe that you need a complete workshop before you can make your first pair of shoes. Many people spend months looking for the perfect shoemaking tools, expensive leather, or industrial sewing machines, only to realize later that none of these things are where shoemaking actually begins.
Every shoe starts with a pattern.
Before you cut leather, prepare an upper, last a shoe, or build a sole, you first need to understand how to create a pattern that works with the shoe last. This is the foundation of shoemaking and one of the first skills I teach every beginner because it affects every step that follows.
The good news is that learning shoe pattern making doesn't require a large investment. With a shoe last, paper, masking tape, a pencil, a ruler, a right-angle tool, and even a simple shoelace to establish the center line, you already have everything you need to begin practicing.
In this video, I show why pattern making is the fastest way to start learning how to make shoes and why mastering this skill will give you much more freedom than simply copying existing footwear designs. Once you understand the relationship between the shoe last and the pattern, you'll be able to develop your own designs and continue building your shoemaking skills with confidence.
