From a chair to a stepladder
Steps is a furniture designed for a reality in which our global resources, funds and living space keep decreasing. The idea was to design a piece that combines two different objects that has two different scenarios-a chair, as a commonly used object, and a stepladder, an object that we don't use on a daily basis, and often requires a storage solution when not in use. By combining these two objects, an object was created that does not require extra storage space, which allows us to purchase one piece of furniture instead of two and additionally saves production resources.
One of the aims for Steps was to create a dynamic piece of furniture that would easily allow both use cases. Therefore it was decided to create Steps as a one-piece furniture, and by that assuring a smooth transition between its two modes of use. The transition is accomplished by just flipping the object upside down: from a chair to a stepladder, or the other way around.
The final model was designed in a CAD program in order to achieve maximal accuracy and stability. It consists of six parts: three steps, two legs, and the backrest. The various parts of the model were sawn using CNC milling of a birch plywood panel.
