What is the impact of our meat and fish consumption on the environment? We probably all know the answer to this question, but how do you educate children about the negative environmental consequences of meat and fish consumption? This PUZZLE provides a playful way to address this current topic in a more understandable and child-friendly way.
One kilogram of beef contains about 16,000 liters of water, 3.9 to 9.4 kilograms of feed and about 22 kilograms of greenhouse gases. Consisting of methane, nitrous oxide and CO2. Furthermore it takes about 27 to 49 square kilometers of farmland to produce one kg of beef. Fairly obvious this amount of land has to be deforested first. But there are not only 'classic' negative consequences of our meat and fish consumption for the environment. For example the medicines administered with the feed are not only ending up in the consumer, but also in our oceans. The antibiotic fish feed is fed in such quantities, that two thirds of it end up in our oceans. Moreover, large quantities of feed are needed to meet the huge demand for meat, and pesticides are used in the process, today more than ever before, despite EU-wide rules. The amount of pesticides used today is more than four million tons per year.
All these facts are not easy to compensate, especially for children. Yet in my opinion it is very important to give a general overview to children about the resources and consequences of our fish and meat industry.
