Stephen Goss | Cantigas de Santiago - 6. Ay ondas que eu vin veer (Ah, waves that I came to see)
Hi everyone! Here's my video for this week, which is a wonderfully relaxing and soothing tune that I hope you all will enjoy! It comes from the Cantigas de Santiago, which is a set of seven medieval songs that have been reworked with a new modern approach by the Welsh composer Stephen Goss.
A couple of years ago, I was very fortunate to visit Spain for a guitar course with the phenomenal Cuban guitarist Rene Izquierdo, which happened to be situated along the route of the Camino de Santiago. It is a really beautiful place with an amazing atmosphere, where you can see a continuous stream of pilgrims walking through the town as they continue on their long and arduous journey. As part of the course, we also had the privilege of performing for the pilgrims in the various local churches. I was scheduled to go there once again this summer, but unfortunately, this will not be possible due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
This particular song, "Ay ondas queue eu in veer", is originally the last of seven from the Cantigas de Amigo by Martin Codax, which tells the story of a young woman looking out to sea over the bay at Vigo, where she is eagerly waiting for her lover to return from a long and difficult voyage.
The Cantigas de Santiago was commissioned by David Russell, who lives rather close to the route of the Camino.
