Between 1989 and 2000, London Underground allowed steam trains to run on a section of the Metropolitan Line between Watford, Rickmansworth and Amersham. These special trains were run to a frequent schedule and had to fit in between the regular Underground electric and Chiltern Railways DMU services. They were driven and fired by volunteer crews.

A class 20 diesel electric locomotive was also running.
