Wooded Kingdom or Steam Gardens from Super Mario Odyssey! I started doing this with Game Boy instruments (that sweet wave channel) and limitations in mind but then I added DPCM samples and realized that the GB can't do that so OOPS i guess. Technically this wasn't completely within limitations anyways since it has some reverb and EQ and some tiny stuff to make it sound a bit fancier. I still wanna call it a Game Boy remix since it has that aesthetic with the main instrumentation.
I thought it might be fun or interesting for other musicians or just anyone to check out what I used to make this, maybe to inspire them to make some music. Maybe I'll do this more often people like to read it and if I'm not feeling lazy! Here goes:
DAW: FL Studio 20
Main VST used: Plogue Chipsounds (DMG chip for that GB sound)
Drums: DPCM Drum and snare samples from Gradius II, EQ'd and boosted a little bit, and also magical8bitPlug by YMCK for the noise hats
Effects: Some stock FL plugins like reverb, parametric EQ 2 and compression tools
Visualizer: My own little preset in ZGameEditor Visualizer, using the Linear and Polar peak effects. The thumbnail was also done inside the same plugin.
Also used: Youlean Loudness Meter 2 (free), because I needed to nail the mix within the -14dB LUFS that YouTube normalizes it to anyway so that it doesn't sound compressed and awful. Still don't know how to make my tracks sound louder, which I'm starting to wonder if it's even possible when working with music on YouTube. This is should be better than usual though, so cool beans.
And that's pretty much it! Not that complicated from the inside, but still lots of fun to do.
As always, feel free to use this in your own projects, with credit!
