Testing 30 Steam Deck 3D prints in 30 days. Day 23: Steam Deck Quick Dock V2 - when modifications go wrong. Honest failure, lessons learned.

THE CONCEPT:
Steam Deck Quick Dock V2 with power button. Deck drops in upside-down like Nintendo Switch, directly into USB-C hub. Power button on front, light pipe for charging LED. Brilliant design—IF you do it right.
MISTAKE #1: ALL PARTS STL
Printed the "all parts" STL. Hole cover and power button were fused into model with supports. Had to break them apart to route cable. Damaged power switch extracting it. Hole cover won't fit back in—leftover bits stuck.
LESSON: Print parts separately. Designer doesn't mention this issue with "all parts" file.
MISTAKE #2: HUB MODIFICATION
Recommended Hiearcool hub not available in Australia. Used similar Lention hub instead. Modified cavity in Bambu Slicer using negative part—that worked fine.
BUT: Cable too short to route correctly. Couldn't use cable tie designed into model. Cable pulled out with Deck.
WORSE: USB-C connector sat ~0.5cm higher than design expected. Deck sat at angle—one side up, one side flush. Unusable with this hub.
MISTAKE #3: LIGHT PIPE
Tried printing light pipe with clear PETG instead of laser-cut acrylic. Deck couldn't sit low enough for it to work anyway because of connector height. Acrylic would've been better, but connector height made it pointless.
WHAT I LEARNED:
Don't modify complex models without understanding all dependencies. This design is GOOD—but needs the specific hub it was designed for.
12 hours printing + 2-3 hours troubleshooting. Up to 300g wasted. Frustrating, but educational.
THE VERDICT:
IF you can get exact Hiearcool hub AND print parts separately: Worth it. Quick docking like Nintendo Switch is brilliant.
Wrong hub? Bin it. I learned that the hard way.
Verdict: 🟡 Only If You Need It (Right hub required) / 🔴 Bin It (Wrong hub)
Not every print works perfectly. Real maker experience. Check my other shorts for docking alternatives that DID work.
